OK Feeling a bit better now ...
Q. If there was one defining moment that has shaped your current life what is it ?
A. I've put this up because after the weekend I got to thinking and realised just how much of who I am now is fandom based and I can pinpoint the exact reason why.
Nexus 2000.
Why ? Its simple. Nexus 2000 was by no means my first con or even first Nexus, however it was the first convention I went to after my return from 6 years living and working in the middle east. So from 95 - 2000 I was lucky to get to one con a year during the two weeks in the summer I was back. Due to that and the demise of Something Else and the KSF (or I think they demised - I certainly stopped hearing from them and haven't seen any of them at the cons I've been to since) I really knew no one in fandom or even in 'real' life (one of the reasons I went to the ME in the first place was a life laundry experience - with the exception of around 4 people and my family I had a clean start).
It was at Nexus 2K two things happened - 1. I ran up the single largest bar bill for one night I have ever run up and 2. I met the Blake's 7 Horizon Core. Event number 2 directly led to me attending Beer&B7 which led to - well pretty much everything i've done in the last 5 years. In particular I meet Reet at the first B&B7 and having no idea who I was, whipped out her laptop and started showing me her photos of Nexus 2K (she was one of the few I didnt meet at the Con). So impressed was I that a woman was geeky enough to bring a laptop to a pub meet we then became great friends and mutual disasterous match making attempts were made on both sides(as some of you are aware). We were unaware that many people in the B&B7 crowd thought we were a couple from Cult TV 2000 (they were really confused with the later events) but being blissfully unaware we continued on as 'friends' until just before Redemption 01 when we gave in and became John and Reet. We then came clean at Redemption 01 when people at the Freedom City room party started asking Reet 1.Why her room was in the smoking section as she hated smokers and 2.How she had arranged to use the room with the connecting door as well. - Basically the reason was the only rooms we could get with connecting doors were in the smoking section and it was too late to cancel one of the rooms we had independently booked (Which proved quite handy as it meant we could close the door on the mess in one room left after the party and worry about it in the morning).
So there you go - I pretty much say with certainty that if I hadnt gone to Nexus 2K my life would be very different today.
