The movie - not the Cyndi Lauper song.

Its was on Sky Scifi Movies today ...

I haven't seen this movie since - well - I *think* 1984 certainly no later than 86 ...

Its the one where Jack The Ripper aka John Lesile Stevenson (as opposed to Robert Louis - Played by David Warner) steals H G Wells' (Played by Malcom McDowl) Time Machine and comes forward to 1979 San Francisco.

Ok - Silly idea, Silly film but I love it. Written and Directed by Nic (ST Wrath of Khan and ST Voyage Home) Mayer it never takes it's self too seriously and it has very obviously placed plot devices but is still fun. The time Machine itself is wonderfully Steam Punky - right down to being solar powered, and theres some lovely tributes to the 50's version of 'The Time Machine' in there too.

Whats more interesting is the fact that certain scenes in this movie were very blatently ripped off in Back to the Future 3 and Mayers own ST:Voyage home. Now as Nic Mayer co wrote the trek movie you can forgive him. But Back to the future 3 not only ripped off one or two scenes but even use much the same lines of dialog - and used the same Actress (Mary Steenburgen) to deliver them ... Lol - I can only assume he was consulted ..

Slash Fans would love this film for the HG/Jack stuff - which is almost certainly intentionaly in the subtext (although its always possible i'm only seeing it cos I've been hanging around with slashers way too much recently) ...

Anyway - I enjoyed it dispite its faults and flaws ... The biggest one is that HG could have followed Jack and just set his machine to arrive one day earlier but hey ho ...

Rollicking SF silliness - 3 thumbs up :)

In other news : I also recorded Grease and Grease 2 in HD, Isn't it scary Rizzo went on to be first lady ;)
