Why do they bother.

This is one of the things that keeps bugging me. Here's a challenge. Name a sitcom that was successfully translated to the other side of the atlantic... I can come up with several that failed off the top of my head. Dad's Army, That 70's show, the Golden Girls, The Kumars at No. 42, Fawlty Towers. Comedy doesn't translate.

The office (I've never seen the US version, so I don't know what they had to change, but it has been successful. As least, to a degree.)

Alledgedly, Coupling is a UK version of Friends, with the Wikipedia summary describing it as:

the dating and sexual adventures and mishaps of six friends in their thirties,

. Although, further down the article, it quotes Moffat drawing his inspiration from Seinfeld. But that still allows for the initial premise to be a "UK friends".
