Well some complete wank butt from turkey decided to try and hack the Gaspode.net forum...

He couldnt get into the data base so just corrupted it insted ...

I've reinstall the latest phpBB but cant be bothered to do more right now ..
I mean the forum is a small board with 8 or 9 regular posters so why bother ?

Are you able to tell how it was done? (i.e. do you think it was a phpBB hole that's now been patched?)

I think thats exactly what it was - I hadn't updated phpBB for about a year so it's possible. Of course I didnt bother taking DB backups either as its such a little quiet board ... Anyway i've updated to the latest version.

When I get some time i'll re set it up ...

It's just - well annoying. If it had been someone I knew who didnt like me would be one thing - but this was just some prat in turkey ...

It not as if it's a high visability board.

phpBB is like a serial timebomb: you defuse one problem with a patch, and within a couple of months, there's another one... It's *so* annoying that we have to think like that, though! I hope it won't take too long to set it back up.

Its not the setting up so much (a couple of hours work at tops)...

Its the loss of the threads and peoples' thoughts and opinions - Thats what the kennel was all about and now they are gone. Plus there were people on the board that I could only contact through it - and all their account info / email addresses have gone ...

For me fandom has always been about people and interaction - its why I run the two pub meets too... Why someone would destroy such an innocent and harmless little board is beyond me.

Does your hosting service take any backups? Might be worth asking - even if they're not bang up-to-date.

Agreed about the connections and the interaction. The sharing of the experience and reactions is a huge part of it. It's annoying that the hacker probably didn't even know or care what it was. Bah.

They dont keep long cycle back ups - and it took me a few days to discover it.

I'd rather just try to get it reset up when I'm feeling more positive about the whole thing. I'll just have to hope my Uni friends pop by again ...

I'm getting more annoyed about this and I probably shouldnt - but i'm more up set by it now than I was when i got the TXT from emperor_zhark on thursday telling me about it.
