For those interested the current state of play (ie List of ps1 and ps2 games) for PS3 backwards compatability on european PS3's being launched here at midnight tomorrow (ie the ones with software only emulation) can be found here ...

SO God of War I and II - Yes
Buzz - Yes
Final Fantasy 12 - Um some mionor issues (bugger)
Singstar - No - well yes with major issues it says - that means no in my book.

OK - so looks like both consoles will still be needed for a while ...

You might want to be aware that The Register carries the warning:

The snag, however, is that users will require the latest release of the PS3 firmware, version 1.6, completed too late to be pre-loaded onto the consoles that go on sale at midnight this coming Friday.

Sony said Firmware 1.6 not only provides a higher level of PS2 and PSone game compatibility, but also includes support for the Folding@Home protein processing client, background downloading of content from the PlayStation Store, support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and adds an on-screen pop-up QWERTY keyboard.

This is no biggy - the 360 updates pretty much everytime i turn it on ...
I dont do pirate games so I'd rather have the firmware tweaked .. The Wii and 360 are online 24/7 so its no worry if the PS3 is the same ...
