Now, I've only seen Life on Mars once through, but thinking back, wasn't everything from Sam's point of view? In other words, every scene had Sam in it. Even the ones he wasn't in, he viewed on a TV, so everything we saw was what Sam saw, just as if it really was all in his head. Quite clever thinking back.
Now Ashes to Ashes, we have been told, is definately happening in her head; at least that's what Alex believes. So why then are we getting scenes with her not in? There is stuff happenning that she is not aware of, but if it is her delusion, it shouldn't be there. Slip up with the writers, or setting us up for something else?
Also, are they going to explain the clown significance?
Slip up, probably. This series not as well written as the original.
As for the second episode being much better. I agree, but only on a scale of it was actually watchable as opposed to actively bad like the first one (with the notable exception of Zippy and George, which I did enjoy)
I agree the first one was clunky and said so, but Zippy and george made up for a lot.
I'm not sure it was a slip up however - It's possible that they want to move it back into a more ambiguous area - reintroducing the idea that on some level what is happening is happening. If it was all in Sam's imagination it makes a whole lot of what went down in season 1 of LOM, in particular, pointless - S1 strongly suggested Sam WAS affecting the future, and all that was ruined (for me anyway) by the final epsiode of S2.
They have also sown hints that Gene is drawing people through as well - but not so obliquly that it may or may not be part of Alex's imagination. They are hinting that he wanted someone to replace Sam and he says as much (I need to go back an rewatch both episodes to be positive - but the suggestion is there - i'm sure of it).
I'm also enjoying the show for the bit of kudos purposeful non PC fluff that it is too ...
I don't think we have been told that its in Alex's head. We have been told that Alex believes it's in her head - which is not the same. I like that they are bringing back the ambiguity of the reality which was there in S1 of LOM.
The Clown ? I think the clown is simply the clown from Bowies 'Ashes to Ashes' video and is there to creep people out much like the test card girl was in S1 (and I really think it would have been a clever bit of casting to have used the test card girl to play Alex's duaghter - but that may just be me...
Actually, I wondered if the test card girl was playing Molly, so you're not alone there.
Thinking to the second episode, why would Alex have been in school for the royal wedding? I remember being on holiday and watched it at my cousins as I was staying with Gran at the time.
We weren't on Holiday - we were given one day off for it. I remember cycling over to my friends house and deliberatly not watching it to annoy both or sets of Parents - we spent the day playing Moneytable on a commadore CBM (which oddly enough is the compiuter on Gene's desk)
Either holidays started later, or your authority had different term dates from mine. The wedding was the 29th July, which should be just at the beginning of the summer holiday.

But i'm semi serious - or am i imagining a couple of lines where its strongly hinted that Gene drew Alex through to replace Sam ..
