I agree the first one was clunky and said so, but Zippy and george made up for a lot.
I'm not sure it was a slip up however - It's possible that they want to move it back into a more ambiguous area - reintroducing the idea that on some level what is happening is happening. If it was all in Sam's imagination it makes a whole lot of what went down in season 1 of LOM, in particular, pointless - S1 strongly suggested Sam WAS affecting the future, and all that was ruined (for me anyway) by the final epsiode of S2.
They have also sown hints that Gene is drawing people through as well - but not so obliquly that it may or may not be part of Alex's imagination. They are hinting that he wanted someone to replace Sam and he says as much (I need to go back an rewatch both episodes to be positive - but the suggestion is there - i'm sure of it).
I'm also enjoying the show for the bit of kudos purposeful non PC fluff that it is too ...
